CWA Executive Vice President Jeff Rechenbach Urges Override of SCHIP Veto
October 26, 2007
CWA Executive Vice President Jeff Rechenbach sent the following letter to all members of Congress urging them to vote to override President Bush' veto of increasing funding for the State Children's Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP).
Democrats almost unanimously voted for the override and Speaker Pelosi's effort even drew support from dozens of moderate Republicans. The override effort fell short because of Republican leaders, false accusations that the SCHIP bill would grant illegal immigrants access to the SCHIP program.
The SCHIP bill contained explicit language forbidding this but President Bush and Republican Leaders hid behind this political gimmick instead of supporting this health care program for poor kids. Most of the states governors asked the president and Congress to support this program but the president and Republican leaders told their members to let poor kids be kicked off the SCHIP program instead. CWA scored this vote and the tally will appear in CWA Rates Congress.
